FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What ages do you teach?
I primarily work with young beginners and elementary-age students, helping them build strong musical foundations through engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons. As students grow, I will continue to work with them throughout middle and high school. If you’re unsure whether your child is ready to begin piano, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to help you decide!
Where do lessons take place?
Lessons take place in students’ homes within the Mueller neighborhood and surrounding areas. Teaching in a familiar environment can help younger students feel comfortable and focused while learning.
What instrument do we need at home?
Students should have access to a full-length keyboard with 88 weighted keys or an acoustic piano for lessons and practice. Weighted keys are important because they help students develop proper technique and touch from the very beginning. If you’re unsure whether your instrument is appropriate, I’m happy to help you evaluate it or suggest good options.
What is your teaching approach?
My teaching focuses on developing true musicianship, not just learning notes on the page. Students build skills in rhythm, ear training, music reading, and expressive playing. Lessons are structured yet joyful, so students build confidence while developing lifelong proficiency.
How long are lessons?
Most students begin with weekly 45-minute lessons, which are ideal for young beginners. As students grow and advance, longer lessons are recommended. I offer 45-minute and 1-hour lessons to both beginners and novice learners - more 1-on-1 equates to a more thorough learning experience and faster skill advancement.
How much practice is expected?
Consistent practice helps students feel confident and enjoy their progress. For most beginners, 20 minutes of focused practice several days per week is a great starting point.
Do parents need to be present during lessons?
At least 1 parent or caregiver must be present for every lesson (18 or younger), especially in the early stages of learning. This helps families support practice at home and stay connected to what students are learning each week.
How do I sign up for lessons?
I intentionally limit my teaching schedule so that each student receives thoughtful, individualized instruction. Lesson openings become available periodically, and families on the studio wait list are the first to be notified when a spot opens.
Do you offer trial lessons?
When a spot becomes available, I typically begin with an introductory lesson so students and families can experience the lesson style and see if it’s a good fit.
What if my child has never taken music lessons before?
That’s completely okay! Many students begin with no prior musical experience. Lessons start with foundational skills and grow gradually as students build confidence and musical understanding. I have worked with over 100 beginners, including adults, who have had successful experiences with the piano.
